Warden Bill Bookout |
The correctional facility located at the Sulphur Law Enforcement Center was
opened in December of 1982 with Bill Bookout assigned as its first full time
jailer a few months later (February 83). Mr. Bookout has since become
the Jail Superintendent and supervises the jail operations as the
Warden. The Sulphur jails capacity is thirty inmates and houses
Sulphur Police prisoners as well as those from the Louisiana Department of
Corrections and Calcasieu Parish
Sheriffs Office. Quite often, stowaways and illegal aliens from countries
such as Peru, Chile, Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras,
Germany, Russia and England are brought to our jail. The Sulphur Police
Department correctional facility works closely with the U. S. Border Patrol
& the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and all area law
enforcement agencies. Even though our jail is classified as a medium
security facility, we do have maximum security capabilities. In the
past, the Sulphur jail has housed a number of extremely high-risk prisoners
and several inmates that are now on death row in the Louisiana State
Penitentiary at Angola.
